TRANSPHOBIA

This site analyzes the media's role in the life of transgender individuals. It uses

knowledge about the Trans* community to inform and empower individuals,

and to eliminate transphobia

in society.

Purpose

The purpose of this website is to analyze the media's role in the life of transgender individuals. For members of the LGBTQ community, living in a nation that is fearful or uneasy about any form of sexuality other then heterosexuality is harmful mentally, and often times physically. Unfortunately for members of the Trans* community, "heteronormativity, or the view that heterosexuality is the only acceptable form of sexuality, figures prominently in American sexual culture" [1]. Society controls what is considered "normal" when any form of sexuality is in question. Sexuality is a prominent topic in politics, education, religion, personal life, and in many other areas. The reason why sexuality is such an important topic is because "everybody has one." Sexuality refers to an individual's tendencies, preferences, and desires with respect to romantic partners and intimate relationships"[2]. When any individual does not fit into the norm constructed by the gender binary, it is common for people to feel unsafe. For individuals who are in the public eye, this social construct can be even more detrimental to their life. Hopefully with more knowledge about what the Trans* community is, and what makes people feel unsafe, people can work together to create a more welcoming and inclusive environment for all by empowering the Trans* community, and eliminating the fear of the unknown.

What Is Transgender?

"Transgender is an umbrella term that is used to describe a diverse group of people who intentionally "mismatch" their sex and their gender identity or behavior." [1]

What Is Transphobia?

"Emotional disgust toward individuals who do not conform to society's gender expectations."

"Societal discrimination and stigma of individuals who do not conform to traditional norms of sex and gender."

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are stars in the media industry. Their family is unconventional, and breaking the stigma surrounding typical family norms, and creative youth. Specifically, they are fully supporting the decision made by one of their children. Shiloh, "who's been a 'tomboy' for years has asked to be referred to as John." Their family is breaking barriers surrounding Trans* youth, specifically through the media spotlight. [7]
